The rest of the book was really really good. Once the story got to its central plot, I couldn’t stop reading. I was worried that the ending would be depressing after I saw reviews on goodreads.com referring to the “surprise sad ending” but it was not sad. It was hopeful, realistic, and very moving. The author’s note at the end intrigued me about Buxton, the settlement in Canada in which the book takes place and left me wanting to learn a lot more about it. Perhaps he should write a non-fiction book about it as a followup up?
